    This forum has many threads on this topic that will help you to make a decision. Some examples following a search:

    Personally, my preference is to instruct a local firm, pay a bit more and know that there won't be potential hand-offs between multiple employees.
    Also, if I need to sign or run through documents or if complications arise or develop, I'd rather resolve face-to-face / in person.
  • London based solicitor for both;
    Selling in London (leasehold), main fee £800+VAT plus £312 to third parties so £2,472
    Purchasing in Manchester (freehold) main fee £750+VAT and £800+VAT for other (disbursements, mortgage, transfer fee, land registry), £1,860 total
    £4.3k total inc VAT (stamp duty not included)

    Hi Nubbins, I have tried to get quote from the RMNJ website, but it says "page unavailable" They seem to have reasonable charges compared to local lawyers! Will it make any difference that I am miles away in Devon?
    Thank you again for your help

    Hi again,

    I think I went through the reallymoving comparison site originally (see link below).

    My own opinion is that a solicitor does not have to be anywhere near where you or the property you are purchasing is based. Some will get comfort in the fact that they can pop in and see the person dealing with their case if needed but as long as you have a scanner, phone and laptop I just do not see the need to do this. I've used a few and I think the furthest was Liverpool and I live in Wokingham!
