Don't Forget Your Toothbrush is a handy site for those short on packing skills and time.
Simply sign up just by adding your email address and enter the type of holiday you're going on (camping, beach, winter sports etc..) and when. It will then give you a list of all the possible things you might need to do before going on holiday and a schedule of when to do them. You can choose which ones you need to do (like cancel the papers, book vaccinations, get your EHIC card) and tick them so they apear on your final list.
You can then print off the list to have handy when you're packing!

Oh I love packing and I do a mock pack about 3 months before I go
But then it turns into an obsession where I pack and unpack and repack .....

DUKE, I hate packing so next time I'm going away, I'll give you a call and you can come round and do mine.
My system usually is that the night before I leave I transfer everything I'm remotely likely to need onto the bed. I then start to pack it into the suitcase and, finding that I have exceeded my luggage allowance by about three times, I transfer stuff back to the cupboard.
When I get to my destination, I find that I have three of everything I DON'T need, and none of what I DO!0 -
You know Gerryco, that's me too.
I always think that I will have enough time, and worry that if I pack stuff too early I will need it in my normal day to day life. so I end up doing it the night before, even the hour before we leave....
So like yourself with 50 tops that I might need, jumpers and trousers in case of freak weather, 3 children and a partner to pack for too, and every essential possibility covered so we don't have to buy anything on holiday to add to our cost, I went all anal and decided to keep a tight record of what everyone wore and used, ie face cream, cotton buds, plasters, tweezers etc.
It has been an insight to tell the truth and at some point I aim to put in on here, but maybe this site has beaten me too it!
I'm glad I did it though, as you are so wise when on holiday to remind yourself that yet again you don't have the things you really want, and too much of it. This time I have a solid list to show me how much we really don't need those extra clothes and weight!
I am off to explore the site now- thanks!0 -
I am the other extreme - I have had a packing list for the last 5 years, which I update every time I go away, and I check that I have the passports and right flight times etc. about every half hour the day before. Sad, isn't it?Reclaimed thanks to this site:
£175 Abbey Mortgage Repayment Fee, £170.03 Capital One Bank Charges £418.07 Lloyds TSB Bank Charges, £2,671.55 Mis-sold Endowment Policy, all for OH0 -
I have used packing lists too: I think the one for the boys stll says "cuddly toy" even though they gave up on them some time ago ...
And my "started packing too early" story is that yesterday I went to get one of those 'money cards' from the PO, got the form, looked at it and realised that (of course) I needed my driving licence or passport. Now, my driving licence would normally be in my handbag, but I'd taken it OUT of my handbag the night before and put it in my suitcase, because I don't intend to that take THAT handbag away with me and I was worried I'd forget it and have to let DH drive all week ...
So I had to go home and get it!Signature removed for peace of mind0 -

Thank God! I thought it was just me that did that!
I pack and unpack then stack everything in piles per family member to check everyones got enough, then repack! Then do it all over again.
Does anyone know where I can get a life?!!0 -
JUST A TIP:
DON'T PUT ALL YOUR THINGS IN YOUR CASE, HUBBIES IN HIS AND KIDS IN THEIRS , SPLIT THEM EVENLY BETWEEN ALL YOUR LUGGAGE, THAT WAY IF A CASE GOES ASTRAY YOU WILL STILL HAVE SOME THINGS IN THE OTHER ONESWhat goes around - comes around
give lots and you will always recieve lots0 -
Thanks martin-this is great.
A friend of mine lost her handbag containing her mobile phone while on holiday, where she had stored al her important info-including insurance company.
I took a tip on MSE site and put all my info into an email, which i print out but can also access on the net when away.0 -
We have a dog that goes to a foster home while we are away but because he is a (many times) rescued dog, he has a lot of issues - one of them being (understandably) stability and security. Because of this, we have to get the cases down at least 2 weeks before we go away so that he isn't freaked out by their sudden appearance and our rushing around shoving stuff in them. My other packing problem is that my husband likes to take his entire summer wardrobe and quite a lot of his winter wardrobe away with him (I'm the opposite, which is fine for a week on a narrowboat but not so clever on a 2 week trip to the USA) so I have to severely limit the amount of stuff he thinks he's taking. Having laid all the piles on the least used spare bed over the course of a couple of weeks, I will cram them into the cases the day before we go.
My husband is the sort who, 10 miles down the A1 will suddenly ask "Did you lock the back door?"0
