A second hand artificial fibre carpet would be more MSE, or otherwise, Mypex sheeting does an equally good job....

Or is your allotment one of those one sees in coffee table books ?

    Haha! Nope mine certainly isn't!

We aren't allowed carpet on our site, and am not entirely sure what Mypex sheeting is or where I can get hold of it?

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BLACK-WEED-MYPEX-MULCH-MATERIAL-GROUND-COVER-WEED-CONTROL-FABRIC-10M-X-1M-/261850401934?_trksid=p2141725.m3641.l6368

This is just one seller chosen at random .Other sellers, widths and qualities of fabric exist. The other well-respected brand used in the trade is Phormisol. :)
  • Hi gothgirl2121 - I might be too late but there are loads of how to guides for laying artificial lawns; the main steps are;
    1. Dig up old lawn and remove large stones from the soil base you have left
    2. Use a rake to level out the base and smooth the surface of it
    3. Lay a stone base, rake flat and compact
    4. Layer on some sand
    5. Put in edgings
    6. Lay down weed membrane
    7. Lay artificial grass and secure with nails/glue/tape
    8. Brush sand over artificial grass before blowing off the excess and then brushing in

I'm looking at doing it myself - it seems fairly straightforward to do, just time consuming/strenuous work - I'm going to have to entice some friends over for a BBQ or something and hand them all equipment when they arrive :rotfl:

Have you done yours? How did it turn out?

    Hi
I ended up installing the astroturk in my back garden and really pleased with it. I got the stuff from B and Q. It's been down a year and still looks good!

    Hi,

Looking to lay artificial turf in our back garden.we have 2 children and we have decided it would be a lot easier to maintain.

Can anyone recommend a low to mid budget but good quality artificial turf.Looking around the £15 a sqm mark?

I wasn't even aware that Turkey had a space programme. My bad. :o
  • Personally I'd ban the stuff, or at the very least put a 100% environmental tax on it. When grass turf is no longer required it decomposes into the ground. And what happens when artificial grass is no longer required? It goes to a landfill site, where it will remain in the ground for HUNDREDS of years and still not be totally decomposed, but leaching chemicals into the soil. And what about in the garden, can a blackbird pull a worm from the ground, no. Can a Bumblebee feed on the nectar of a buttercup. No. Its just plain hideous and always look rubbish as well. same applies with plastic ivy and plastic plants.
