One-off CD destruction

Hi,

I've got a load of CDs with Bank Statements, coursework and Photos on. I am talking about 300 CDs i've been collecting since 2002.

I need to get rid of them but I don't want the data and photos getting into the hands of the enemy, so i'm looking for some way of secure media destruction.

I have looked into SITA, but they only do it as a regular service for businesses.
I'd like to get them shredded, but i've also seen the 'microwave' technique - not sure how good this is for the microwave in question.

Anyone got any ideas/suggestions?

Thanks in advance

Martin

if they are conventional written CDs (by yourself) simply crack them or even use a key or something on the rear of it to remove a bit of "paint" so they are see thru , one scrape on that will stop them being read

or if you want to spend £20 http://www.amazon.co.uk/AmazonBasics-8-Sheet-Strip-Shredder-Shred/dp/B0079JLXZ6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1428837561&sr=8-1&keywords=cd+shredder

Put on a protective suit, safety glasses and a hard hat, and proceed to a safe place with your sledge-hammer.
    • Ensure the environment is free from pets, small children and other animals.
    • Put about 50 CDs into a strong plastic bag
    • Lay the bag of CDs on a very solid lump of wood, or stone or brick or metal.
    • Beat merry hell out of the CDs with the sledge-hammer.
Repeat until no more CDs left.
Dispose of the CD fragments / shards responsibly.

Of you could buy a shredder with a CD shred function and go for your life.

Home burn CD's, destroy the coloured layer, job done. I suggest a wire brush attachment on a drill on the centre/back (label side) of the disk, which will destroy the file allocation sectors.

In fairness, many home burn discs will be unreadable after a few years anyway - especially if burnt at high speed on cheap discs

10 seconds in a microwave set on high should be enough to make the data unrecoverable......

Also it like a mini firework display as the cd's arc.

... and maybe the microwave unusable :)

Just wearing some decent workgloves and bending them will probably make them unreadable. Alternately letting a four year old get hold of them for a just a few minutes is usally enough.

I wouldn't recommend that as some explode like a bomb into small fragments when you break them

This page shows you where the tale of contents (TOC) is.

    http://www.herongyang.com/CD-DVD/CD-TOC-Where-Is-Located.html

Take a domestic drill with a sharp wood drill bit, and drill one or two holes in this area, ideally with a drill bit wider than the width of the TOC.

Unless anyone wishes to correct me, no drive will be able to read the disc without the TOC.
