Flight cancelled

Our flight from Rome was cancelled but we did not find out until we arrived at the airport in Rome for our return flight. When we contacted our travel agent they were also unaware of the cancellation. We finally caught an alternative flight later that day, but to Manchester instead of Birmingham. After much communications, we were informed that the middleman was informed the flight would not be taking place, but had incorrect email so information was not forwarded on. We are still waiting for compensation and payment of all outstanding expenses for last May. We received an email from monarch recently that according to their records the flight was on time and therefore we did not have a claim! The flight did not exist!!!
