It will depend on many factors. Your reasons for wanting it, you age, your mental health stability, your history relationship, how many children you've had, your current health.

If you have a medical condition that means that having a baby could be dangerous to your health and there is evidence of having tried different contraception methods and you don't tolerate any of them, and you have already given birth to 5 children, you are much more likely to get it without too much trouble than if you are 25, had one child, suffering from PND, a history of previous depression, separated from partner and used to be on the pill for years before having a baby, then the chances are much lower.

Your GP can suggest other options but ultimately can't refuse to refer you to gynaecology.
Where I live it's a 6 month wait to see gynae and then a further 6+ months to have the procedure as it's low priority.
In the meantime you should be using alternative contraception which may also help things like period issues (which sterilisation will do nothing for). The mirena coil is also slightly more effective than sterilisation.

Also worth noting that male sterilisation is a much easier procedure so worth your OH considering.

I was sterilised at 28, when my eldest was almost 4, and youngest almost 3.

My GP supported this because I was medically unable to take the pill and had three pregnancies during the time of having a diaphragm for contraception. They did go through the horror situation of what if something happens to your children, but I would never have had more to replace them as you just cant do that! I might add that my then husband always had an excuse for why he couldn't go (football season, cricket season) and I couldn't go through the risk of pregnancy/miscarriage again.

OP, I'm in the camp that it's your body and if YOU know you don't want more children, you should be supported in your choice. None of us know how long any relationship will last and if you end up with a new partner, it doesn't mean you have to have more children.

    Good luck, whatever you decide.

I did used to know someone who was refused sterilisation. She had 4 children and was around 28 at the time. I think it was argued that she was too young.

I had no problem getting a sterilisation at the same time as a planned c section- however I was 43 and having my second section.

I was sterilised at 34 within a few months of my 2nd child being born, but that was because it would have been dangerous medically for me to have an unwanted pregnancy and we were not planning to have anymore. I wasn't offered counselling, all they said was it would be much safer for my husband to have the snip (due to my medical stuff) but my husband is totally feart of needles and ops so he flat out refused lol

My mum was sterilised in her teens, just after I was born, it was done against her will but for various reasons was the only option.

I also have friends of various ages who never ever want to have children but are not allowed to be sterilised as they have never had children. I think that is unfair, as women should have the right to choose and I believe there are a lot of unwanted children out there due to contraceptive failure in women who 100% never wanted to have children but were not allowed to have the operation.
There is no shame in not knowing; the shame lies in not finding out.

I'm just wondering why the OP asked the question on here instead of asking her GP.

I appreciate the thread was started on a Saturday evening at 7:44pm so she wouldn't have been able to ask her GP there and then - but it's hardly something that just occurs to you whilst sitting watching BGT.
