Have you tried downloading iTunes from Apple and saving the file, rather than updating from within the program by responding to the "new version of iTunes is available" message? The latter often fails for me too.

Just be careful, my parents went Google searching for iTunes and ended up downloading from a non-official website which filled their PC with malware.

Tell your parents to use a browser which supports Adblock. All those fake download links will be hidden.

I have tried over and over. Even updating Avira, I get a message that says "an error has occurred, pls try later".
I tried junk removal tool and various other tools, and I am now at my wit's ends.
It is an old Stone laptop I bought from my son, when I bought him a new desktop.
Could it be the age of my laptop, or the fact there may be a virus?
I tried system restore, but unlike my previous XP device, W7 requires you to create a previous restore point, which I never did.
    Don't know what to do.
Even thinking of doing a factory restore, but don't know how.

Why not at least try a proper podcatcher before you flatten and reinstall?

Well, the issue seems more serious than just podcasts.
I cannot download the latest Avira update, or the Malawarebytes update, or even open the latest download of LibreOffice.
    What is going on??
