Basic printer needed

Options
Looking for some advice please,

At home I use an old Dell laptop running windows 7 and need a small printer, I only need something to print off letters, bank statements and generally simple single colour documents and it will only have light useage.
Can anyone recommend a printer that is not too expensive and more important, cheap to run.

Thanks.
I choose the rooms that I live in with care,
The windows are small and the walls almost bare,
There's only one bed and there's only one prayer;
I listen all night for your step on the stair.

You will be hard pressed to find better than this:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Pantum-P2050-Mono-Laser-Printer/dp/B009K2Q8ZU

Do you have a branch of Home Bargains near you? I saw Pantum laser printers on sale in my local branch for £29.99!!! For light usage even the 700 page starter cartridge will last a loooong time.

The main issue that may put people off is the brand name as Pantum is not as well known as Canon, HP, Lexmark, Samsung, Epson or OKI. But for £30 I'd take a punt in your position.

If you want 'cheap to run', then forgo 4 colour inkjets and get an entry level mono laser. I'd suggest one of the Samsung models.
Vastly lower running costs, and no ink carts to dry up if you don't use it for a few weeks. Starting price around £60.
Never heard of Pantum, and I'd be wary of the price and availability of replacement toner carts. The cheapest printers to buy are rarely the cheapest to run, and the toner cart on that model will cost you more than the initial outlay on the printer. And it's not wireless.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Don't you mean an entry level mono laser?

I've recently got a canon pixma all-in-one for around £40 which seems ok - a bit noisy but does the job, and I get the cartridges refilled which is cheaper (it takes one black & one colour).

I had never heard of Pantum until a couple of years ago. I saw one of their basic models reviwed in PC Pro and they gave them a recommendation. Truth is many printers are cheaper than the the cartridges they print from. If the original cartridge lasts up to a year, you're doing well. Many users get much longer. And remember some cartridges can be refilled (although the model I referenced does is not refillable as of yet).

Pantum are a Chinese make. Then again, HP, Samsung etc are no doubt made in China too.

I agree. That's exactly what I did. I got fed up with the old inkjet printer. Every time I needed to use it, it used half a cartridge of ink just to clear the blocked jets!

With the Samsung laser I simply turn it on and it works!
I've just ordered a replacement toner powder kit from

I agree. I have never owned an inkjet even though I have been tempted, being put off by high ink usage as you say. All I have ever had have been mono and colour lasers from the likes of HP, Lexmark and now OKI. A laser printer is pretty much unpack, install and pretty much trouble free printing from thereafter.
