Deals for single people staying in London

I am considering spending 2 nights in London end June. I will be travelling alone.

I am looking for deals or packages where it includes train or coach travel to London.

Don't want to stay in a hotel which it takes a long time to travel to central London. One of my friends did a London stay and the hotel was in Watford. I couldn't remember the firm.

Also what is better for me financially to get a visitors Oyster card or buy a daily travel pass? Will be using the underground for travelling to/from hotel and attractions.

Also room needs its own bathroom. I rather pay the extra.

Don't mind if the hotel offers room only as being in London, there are PLENTY of places to get breakfast and its more MSE.

I would recommend an oyster card - you can use it all day and it caps the cost to the same as a day travel pass, however the main benefit is that for any future visits to London you can top up online and pre prepare for your next visit without having to purchase another card. I bought one a couple of years ago and still use it for my occasional visits to London.

I cant help with packages for single people with include travel - I have tried to find this for myself before with no luck - these type of packages which I have found are usually aimed at 2 people travelling together. I have stayed in hotels around the kings cross area which have been reasonable for London and very handy for arriving and leaving as the trains come in at kings cross.

The ones I would definitely use again on my own were; The Wardonia Kings Cross Inn and The Generator.

I've always booked separately, so, on the assumption you're coming in on a train at King's Cross, this place has a number of single rooms - it's clean, functional, and for somewhere just off the main drag of Euston Road, remarkably quiet, even with a room at the front. I booked it through bookng.com, so that's the link here

    http://www.booking.com/hotel/gb/melville.en-gb.html?aid=311076;label=hotel-34365-gb-lmqwU5n06%2AIVOSJ0Ba7MYgS28544471460%3Apl%3Ata%3Ap1%3Ap2%3Aac%3Aap1t1%3Aneg;sid=565c39466ae17a260d1ca03927e9a7e2;dcid=4;ucfs=1;srfid=2c85f26ce630ee2f42738c69c4699e5ca3bc66faX1;highlight_room=

Breakfast involves a walk to their sister hotel across the street, but there's plenty of food choice in the area, at the stations and around, so I booked room only

There's really no point in buying an Oyster card of any kind if you have a contactless debit card, because you have to pay a deposit and top up.

I also would receommend booking transport and hotel yourself as you will get more choice and it will be cheaper. The cheap train fares are usually loaded 12 weeks before, so for the dates you are looking at probably out now, so firstly book that ASAP. Also depending on where you are coming from have a look at megabus as they do cheap coach fares from places like Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool etc to London for the dates you are looking from £1 each way, plus a 50p booking fee, so £2.50 in total of a return fare. If you can avoid spending a Sat night in a hotel in London it will usually work out a lot cheaper as this is the most expensive night.
For budget hotel rooms with ensuites take a look at Travelodges and Premier Inn rooms.

Watford is not in London, but in Hertfordshire. There is a Holiday Inn Express (so includes breakfast) beside Watford Junction train station and a fast train from there takes 20 minutes into Euston (the slower train takes about 50 minutes, but links into the Bakerloo tube line along the way), wonder if it is that hotel your friend stayed at? Hotel rooms outside of central London are often cheaper, but you have extra travelling costs in terms of fares and time. If you are considering staying on the outskirts of London, I had a quick look and the Wembley Park premier Inn is £39 per room and £59 per room on Sunday 21st and Mon 22 June with the buffet breakfast extra. it is is zone 4 so you will pay 50p more per off peak tube journey or 90p more on the daily cap compared to zone 1 travel. It is across the road from the Wembley Park metropolitan and jubilee line station (with no rail works that weekend) and a short walk from the National Stadium. 30 minute approx train journey involving changes to South Kensington for Science, Natural History Museum and V&A. 20-25 minutes of direct journey on Jubillee line to Waterloo for The London Eye, Thames embankment, House of Parliament, Big Ben etc.

Use www.tfl.gov.uk jouney planner to plan your trips and check for engineering works if staying elsewhere on other dates.

The Travelodge in Wembley High Road which is apparently a new one, is beside the mainline and bakerloo tube station is £43 and £45 for the same dates. The Wembley TL (not High Road) is cheaper but do not stay there are it is not really in Wembley but in a high crime area and a good walk from the tube station so not really that safe for a lone tourist IMO. Personally I think the Wembley Park PI is probably the better place to stay at, especially if coming into Kings Cross/St Pancras as there is a direct train from there so very easy journey. If only going for a couple of days, take a backpack as easier to carry around rather than paying for lugguage storage. For cheaper theatre seats, go to the theatre box office of a show you want to see, preferably before opening time to look for day seats. Check out Theatremonkey.com for dayseat infor as soem liek Les Mis do not do dayseats. Also keep an eye on the group buying sites for eating out deals and London bus and riverboat tours etc..

If you're coming in university holidays you can get reasonable accommodation deals (will be much posher than when I was at uni, with private showers). For example, LSE have a lot of central halls - one block is next door to the Globe Theatre

  • laterooms is quite good and you can get cashback through quidco etc. Just double check where the place is as some do stretch the definition of london. Otherwise easyhotel is worth a look, you don't get a tv but if you're in london you're not going to stay in the hotel and watch tv the whole time.

Really it depends what sort of thing you're going there to do as well as to which areas it is worth looking into. The further out it is the cheaper it *might* be but then you have more travel costs.

I like oystercards myself, you can get a refund on the card on your last day, then you can go on busses to see more of london itself then. The oyster card will then only bill you for what you use or cap you once you get up to the same as a travel card anyway so you're not having to worry would a travel card have been cheaper or not.

So what sort of things do you like? Are you going for museums or shopping or just to hang out in the westend or south bank to see some culture? None of which has to be super expensive if you plan it right.

Russell Square to Holborn (near British Museum) area have a number of independent hotels and hostels (some better than others, for sure). One I've used several times is The Thanet Hotel who have single rooms - the rooms can be somewhat small (this is London, after all), but very clean (which is what concerns me most in hotels).

I often travel to London on my own.

Last time I stayed at the Premier Inn in Watford. I found it far quicker to get into town than other London Premier Inns I've used in the past (eg Docklands, Hammersmith, Putney).

From memory it took 25mins from Watford High St (changing at the next stop, Bushey, where you get the quick train to Euston - 19mins).

It took me the best part of an hour to get into town from the Docklands one, despite it being in London itself.

Agree with the Oyster - they're obsolete so just use your normal contactless debit card.
