Get a Synology NAS a DS215j should do you nicely.

These are a great bit of kit. I have had a DS212 for a good few years now and it keeps all data on it that various computers can get to. Bit of a learning curve to setup but once running they are great.

You can find more info at the Synology website. I found it all easier to understand when I read on that page how the model numbers worked as it's easy to find the right one for you (for example 2 HDD bays and year of manufacture).

I also recommend Synology NAS as I have the 4 drive unit.

    Really? Your surprised?

The second most common desktop/laptop OS is still Windows XP despite it being released in 2001/ almost a decade and a half ago!

There are the vocal minority that remain cutting/ bleeding edge but majority of people are a long way out of date and if it aint broke then they dont fix it.

Plenty, its good enough if you just use one machine and don't need your emails backed up.

Long time since I used it, but you can back up (copy) your .PST email etc file(s) easily enough.

If you fancy doing a diy 4 bay NAS there is a super offer on ebuyer for one of the HP microservers: £119 inc vat after £60 cashback:

Put Linux, NAS4free or FreeNAS on it and you have a bargain.
Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.

It is sometimes a shock to realize what some computer users don't know about computers. My brother recently told me his computer was out of action. Thinking I might be able to help him I enquired what operating system he was using. After some hesitation he replied "It is a Dell computer".

    Hi again folks,

Just to say that I have just ordered the Synology Nas DS215j from Amazon and I am off now to get a 3TB WD Red from my local store.

I realized, as some of you inferred, that it does not make sense to buy the Nas unless you intend to utilise it to a realistic capacity. So, it is a 3TB drive and not a 1TB as I first surmised. I plan to get another 3TB Red in the near future when I have recovered from the pain of the present expenditure.

This is good news for Lady Stockton who is an obsessive serial
downloader and a dear friend of the Torrents and Demonoids. I dont usually let her anywhere near my computers (she lives next door) but I will invite her to offload a few dozen programs onto my brand new Nas. I may find some of them useful.

So many thanks for your help. This kit has some very good reviews and looks right up my street. Cannot wait to get my hands on it.
