Thanks for all your answers ! ...........can you help with this as well please.
It says this with the iMac..........Please note: This iMac is eligible for a free upgrade to OS X Yosemite through the Mac App store......never having owned one before or any other Apple product..........what does this mean and is it worth doing.....and how is it done if it is worth upgrading ?
Thanks.......... I know I'm going to have to take some lessons on how to use this thing !

Apparently there's a serious security flaw fixed by updating to Yosemite.
I'd suggest back everything up to an external drive using Time Machine then do the update (while plugged into mains charger).

Meanwhile I just now installed Paint Shop Pro 7 on Yosimite using Wineskins, easy enough and PSP appears to be working well.

When I updated to Yosemite iPhotos stayed in place. Just had a read about the Mac Photos app. To get the best from it you should sync with iCloud. There are some complicated and maybe risky compression options that I'm not sure about yet and need studying.
But it's obvious to me that if I used Photo with iCloud we'd instantly exceed the free 5GB storage and have buy more at an expensive Apple rate. I am not sure if we lose the simple right click and edit in iPhoto feature that's so handy for a quick crop or straighten.
You lose Aperture or at least development is stopped. Forums are saying it's not Yosimite compatible.

iPhoto has a slightly buggy integration with Elements Editor, but at least I'd got used to it. I am not sure how well Photo integrates, it's essential for OH and I for serious editing, to be able to right click in iPhoto, edit in Elements, save and the saved item stays in the same event. Knowing Apple they probably broke a few things along the way.

Think I'll hold off switching to Photo for now, the redesign seems to mostly for Apples benefit not the user's.

When you run Photos it asks if you want to use the iCloud feature, I opted not to as I don't have iCloud set up and have nearly 500GB of pictures.

Haven't tried to integrate with Elements as I use Elements Organiser to catalogue my pictures.

Forgot to say that when you install Photos it doesn't replace iPhoto, you end up with both.

However, if you migrate to Photos you can still use iPhoto but any changes or edits don't show up in Photos they remain in iPhoto but then you'd expect that.

Funny that, just today, a few days after installing Yosemite , I got an innocent looking update prompt. Accepted it, it was a 2GB biggie. After reboot, iPhoto appeared to be GONE and Photos was in its place in the dock. A friendly prompt asked me to 'get started' with Photos. Nearly panicked... hunted through the Applications and found iPhoto still there. Photos removed from dock, iPhoto put back, jobs a good 'un.

OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 Combo Update can be downloaded here, in case it's of interest:-
    https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1804

(I know it's automatic via the App store but I prefer to keep a copy of the installer.)
