Why do you need to remove soil, why can't you just dig the compost in?

If my parents removed the clay from their garden, there wouldn't be anything left!

Our local recycling centre used to take soil and hardcore but now charge £15 a trailer :-O Not sure what I'm going to do with my excess clay when I start renovating my garden as there will be a lot of it! Check that your local recyling centre or tip does or doesn't take it.

Ouch. Or local place has started to get a lot stricter on business waste, to the point it seems the rubble skip is coned off and you need to ask for access so they can check if you're a builder or not. £15 a trailer is still a lot cheaper than a skip.

Still, are there any farms near you? most will happily take clean soil, especially if you're willing to take it up to them.

Legal, or illegal, would depend on how OP views this matter! My example was an illegal one for no permission was sought. Had the person sought permission the response would have been "You are having a laugh".

I allowed an acquaintance to place about 30 tonnes of clean soil in my field, but he had to do the carting. It costs time and money to do that bit, which is the OP's problem.

To be honest, I wouldn't have accepted clay, unless filling a pond, or something like that.

I'm currently 'relocating' about 5 skips worth of rubble from my renovation. Around here skips are £280 each. The rubble may be used legally in farm gateways and tracks.

Across the valley, a farmer was fined £6k for accepting waste on his own land. They were excessive amounts, but someone was watching, even in this quiet place!

My council currently charges £1.10 for every 25kg sack of soil or rubble at the [STRIKE]tip[/STRIKE]waste recycling facility.

It depends what you mean by a "substantial amount". We had the front garden done - the last occupants had filled in a semi sunken garden with rubble, and gravelled over the top. It was a couple of feet deep in places !

After a little calculation of time, effort and skips, it worked out better value to get a local landscaping firm in to remove what turned out to be an estimated 16 tonnes of rubble and gravel, and bring in 12 tonnes of top soil. I'm up for a bit on manual labour, but some jobs just require a mini-digger and a tip-truck !

Hippo Bag is another option, but wet clay weights so much there's a limit to what a dumpy-bag will hold

Thanks all, the replies have made me think and laugh!
I'm going to do as was suggested and raise the beds, they are around drive so seems a more sensible and cheaper option to just mix compost in with it.
    Thank you all again.
