Power company blew up my PC!

Almost 2 weeks ago, Western Power Distribution managed to misswire a temporary generator near my home, meaning that quite a few of the surrounding properties have suffered damage to electrical goods.
My PC and monitor were blown, as was my router and power shower.
I still have no shower, although hopefully that will be dealt with this week.
However, yesterday the local computer company who deal with the replacements on behalf of Western Power Distribution phoned me to say DELL had emailed them to advise my replacement would be ready 27th August. This is 5 weeks after the damage was caused, and in my opinion way too long.
As you can imagine, i'm pretty peed off.

Has anyone else suffered similar problems, and what am i able to do about it?

  • They are replacing it at no real cost to you ( presuming you are not a business) except time. What more could they do?

In my opinion i dont think it is, If you use the computer for business then its different but if it is on a personal computer then its not really an essential items so trading standards i dont think would think they were taking too long.
  • It's still annoying though

with things like this. u need to be pushing people to get it through the system faster. atleast 2 phone calls a day. just see what the status is. and they odnt know u dont use the pc for business. just need to hound them. it doesnt sound the nicest way to do things. but it works. all i do when i need something doing, making people understand its detrimental. just chase it up. so if the power company says they are waiting for dell....ring dell and just chase everything up.

As it happens, i do use the pc for business, although i also have a pc at my business premises, so it's not a huge problem on that front, although it is a big inconvenience.
I'm baffled though that it's suggested that i should just put up with it however long it takes

Assuming you want a like for like replacement Western Power can't make Dell move any faster - you could try asking them for a different make.

Did you have a surge arrester on the power supply, they sometimes have cover to replace damaged equipment which might be quicker

I know what you mean - although I don't use my computer for work, I do use it for an awful lot of stuff, from banking to shopping as well as essential things like ordering repeat prescriptions! I appreciate that this was an accident, but it is a huge hassle to suddenly need to plan your life without a computer, particularly when it is unexpected. However, unless you can show that you have suffered out of pocket expenses, the fact that this has been a right old pain in the @rse for you probably won't register with a company who are already makign an effort to resolve the problem.

You could try asking whether they would reimburse you the cost of hiring a computer to tide you over (is that even possible?) if there are things you need it for. It is all very well for people to say that you can live without it, but for all we know you could be housebound and rely on your PC for everything!

i'd second this - the power supply blew up to my computer (cue hysterical phone call to OH!) a while back and luckily nothing else was damaged. just a power surge in the system, not a wiring mishap like yours so nothing much I could do - I now have it on a surge protector!
