Epson scanner reporting carriage locked but it isn't?

I have an Epson 3170 scanner which has always worked fine. Last used around one month ago. Today I put in a document to scan and got an error message that the carriage is locked. I checked and it is not. I also checked and the pulley is not broken everything looks fine inside. I turned it on and off. Same problem. Never has this problem, or this message, before. Anyone got any ideas?
