now my rug is stinky help

Had this rug for an age (25 years) Just moved house and thought I should clean it better than just hoovering. Put it outside over a rail and beat it to get dust out. Left it over the rail in the sun and now it stinks. Its not a very long pile and it could be wool/part wool but its really thickly packed tight pile. No way…

Bicarb should be safe for most pets, although not necessarily any oils you might add--I know cats aren't fond of most citrus so we avoid those but probably best to check.
