now my rug is stinky help

Had this rug for an age (25 years)
Just moved house and thought I should clean it better than just hoovering.
Put it outside over a rail and beat it to get dust out. Left it over the rail in the sun and now it stinks.
Its not a very long pile and it could be wool/part wool but its really thickly packed tight pile.
No way will it fit in washing machine and I doubt it could go in launderette machine either although happy to ask them if it possible.
Had a rug doctor on it 2 years ago but it doesn't get deep into the pile ( dunno if it should)
Will take a pic in a bit.
Is it just leave it out in the garden a bit longer or febreeze it to death?

What does it smell like? Most smells get stronger in heat and sunshine, so I doubt it was airing it that made it smell. If you know what caused the smell you will probably have better luck removing it.0

I find that covering with a bicarbonate of soda and leaving for a few days or a week , then hoovering it away often works. Repeat a few times if necessary. Do this before trying Febreeze.
You can buy big boxes of bi-card on line or in some stores such as Wilko. This worked for me on a coat bought on Ebay that stunk of perfume, took about 4 times. Good luck.0 -

A whole host of things
Papery, cat, dust, old, wool,
Anyway I slung it in the garage last night as it wasn't coming in the house, it smells just like dust now so have beaten it some more.
Tinypic being slow as chuff today but soon as can will post pic.
marli654 how thick do I cover it? Just a sprinkle like icing sugar or thick white all over?
Thanks for answers63 mortgage payments to go.

Bicarb should do it then. A generous sprinkle--similar to what you'd use of those commercial powders such as shake n v@c should do it. You may also want to add a few drops of essential oils.0

Thanks for that.
And where on the high street would I find essential oils?
Tesco/Morrison's/lush/boots/wilkos?
Not my thing so I genuinely don't know
I link to a similar type of rug as tiny pic not playing ball today

They do them in boots, although they're a bit pricy. Our local poundshop has them in for a much better price but that is probably hit or miss. The essential oil is completely optional though, so if it is too expensive/you can't find it don't worry about it! If you can, we like lavender or mint.

I use a HM "freshener" on our rugs and carpets every couple of weeks. Equal parts bicarbonate of soda and salt, and essential oils (cheap ones like peppermint, tea tree, orange and lime, I get them in big bottles off ebay) Mix them all in a jar, sprinkle liberally on the rug/carpet, leave for as long as you want before hoovering really well. I usually just leave for an hour or so, but if you can leave it for longer it might work better.
The salt is supposed to kill bacteria, tea tree oil should act as an anti-fungal. Soda bicarb neutralises odours. Other essential oils cover up any remaining smell! My children love to do the sprinkling, rubbing in and hoovering, so it's a job I don't even really have to do

I'd use the bicarb a few times.... thick layer, work it down into the pile with a brush if possible. Leave it, vacuum it the day after.
For essential oils, Holland & Barretts often do a BOGOF, but if you can get rid of any smell it's better than adding new ones.0 -
If I did this on my carpet, would it be safe for dogs? When life hands you lemons, ask for tequilla and salt and give me a call!!!0

I just googled bicarb and dogs, seems as long as they dont eat the stuff its fine.
Was gonna look for this thread to update
Bashed rug with baseball bat to get dust out.
Sprinkled just with bicarb and left overnight in garage flat.
Today have hovered it all off and it def smells better.
Its having more bicarb tonight.
Btw it also looks a lot brighter.63 mortgage payments to go.
