Home insurance with student lodger

Hi all,

I'm looking to get a lodger, who may potentially be a full-time postgraduate student. I've checked with my current home insurance supplier and they will not cover me if I have a lodger at all.

On speaking to a couple of other companies, I've been told having a lodger is fine, but not if they are students. Of the companies that have explicitly stated students are OK, the quotes are quite high. But when I have phoned some companies and asked specifically about student lodgers, they seem unsure!

Anyone got any experience and can recommend a provider? Its turning into a full time job!

Thanks in advance.

Yes, that's what I am doing/have done. But its taking time to call them and a lot of companies seem unsure as to whether they have a distinction between student lodgers/any other type of lodger. Hence why I am asking if anyone has any practical experience.

Examples of ones which allow lodgers include Nationwide, Direct Line and Aviva so perhaps try those first. I have used them all but my recent lodgers haven't been students. I have met this problem before when getting but not in the last 5 years (when I haven't needed to ask). With the increasing number of homeowners taking lodgers, the insurers are perhaps losing customers but they seem to be suspicious of students.
