Do you think I can still negotiate on price from Evans Halshaw?

I've seen a car online with Evans Halshaw but it's a couple of hundred miles away. Their policy is to transfer cars to your local dealer for free (well I actually had to pay £200, which is refundable even if I don't end up buying the car). Having done this, they know im seriously considering the car and that I must be keen!

Do you think that this now puts me in a bad position to negotiate on price? I would usually always negotiate and get something off! But having ordered the car to be moved to my local dealer, paid a refundable deposit and waited 5 days, I can't help but feel I'm not in a good bargaining position!

Any advice?

    you could be in a better position as you appear serious, now the car is moved they are going to have to update the advertising. If it is an everyday car play hardball and be prepared to walk away if they will not negotiate. They will have a margin built in for discount and over valuation of trade ins.
    But be reasonable with your expectations.

    Unfortunately it's not a car you see around very often. There's nothing at a better price locally, only at a long distance away.
    To get the car within my ideal budget, I'm hoping for a 4% discount (eg £8k, would be £320 off). Is that reasonable?

    I'd be interested in reading the terms of the £200........

    But is the other car's price still better when you factor in a one way rail ticket? If so, there's nothing stopping you haggling.
    What does Parker's guide say about the car?

    I would too. Last time I spoke to EH about a car transfer the deposit was non-refundable unless the car is not as advertised. ie dents and mileage/service issues.

    Assuming you are correct in it being fully refundable, no questions asked then you are absolutely in no worse a position for having had it moved. Arguably you might even be in a slightly stronger position as relocating the vehicle clearly has a cost to them and if they dont sell it to you they very possible have to pay to relocate it again somewhere else.

    If you are wrong about it being fully refundable then things are different.

    You might get a small discount from them but in my experience they price their cars very well and are usually unwilling to lower the price. I think I got £250 discount on the last one I bought - and was very happy with the price.

    How far away was the car? £200 would get you a lot of fuel to drive there your self.

    I have visited an Evans Halshaw dealership recently and was told all about the "Move me closer" service they provide where you pay a £200 deposit which is fully refundable if the car is not for you, and the following is from their website -

    "Where a Customer attends an Appointment and notifies Evans Halshaw, on the day of the Appointment that they do not want to Purchase the Vehicle, the Reservation Fee will be refunded by way of credit to the payment card used in accordance with Clause 5 within three Working Days"

    (This is Clause 5 -
    5. To secure a Vehicle movement, the Reservation Fee must be paid by debit or credit card in the name of the Customer. The Customer must also provide their:
    a. name;
    b. full postal address;
    c. telephone number;
    d. email address
    e. chosen method of contact;
    f. Chosen Evans Halshaw Dealership;)

    More interestingly for me was the fact that they don't sell cars with a full MOT, they will only MOT a vehicle if there is less than 6 months remaining on the current MOT. That put me right off, as well as it was made very clear to me that they do not negotiate on price. At all.
    :)
