Can anyone tell me how to stop Hotels pre authorising my card, then when I come to pay they take the money without using the pre authorised amount !
this appears to block my credit until the repayment date !

Thats a tough one and to a degree depends upon the front office system they use. Some take the authorisation, then take the payment and allow the authorisation to "expire" which means that it is automatically re-credited to your available credit (about 7 days). At check-out ask them to make payment using the authorisation details obtained at check-in. They can use the pre-authorisation number. This is what they would do anyway if for example, between checking in and checking out there was no credit left on your card!
By the way, they seem to default to about 150% of the room rate so cover "incidentals". So if you dont intend to eat at the restaurant or drink the mini bar dry then tell them at check-in!0 -

tell them you wont be using room service or their resturant and they should have no need if you pay in advance:santa2:0
