Early retirement whilst suspended?

Hi, is it possible to apply for early retirement whilst suspended? I wanted to take early retirement in september but due to an incident at work I have now been suspended. Does anyone know if this will affect me drawing my full pension? I currently work in the NHS.

To be honest I have no idea but at a guess I would think you can apply but it might be subject to any outcomes of your situation.

The best thing would be to contact the pension provider and get the options so that you are in a better position to make decisions going forward.

I would speak to your HR department and to your Union Rep (if you are a member).

On the face of it, you are still employed, and have not been subject to a disciplinary "penalty" of any kind at the moment (innocent until prove guilty in criminal court terms) so I can't see why you can't apply and be considered in the same way as other employees.

Don't companies usually tend to grant early retirement to people they want to get rid of?

    Just asking. :)

In reality you will probably be able to do deal with HR. See your union rep asap.

It probably depends on the nature of the 'incident' also. If it's an open-and-shut gross misconduct (e.g. physically assaulting another member of staff with witnesses present) then I can't see the HR team being generous. :)

Best of luck with your application for early retirement however. You won't know unless you ask.

Ahh, but you are dealing with NHS HR, which 'works in mysterious ways' as the saying goes.... They, or their employers don't pay the pension from 'local' money. NHS pensions, as I'm sure you know, come from central government so sometimes this can be used to deal with issues like this.

  • Hi guys, looking for a bit of help. Basically I work as a football coach and I am on a 0 hours contract. I have worked for my employer for well over 4 years now and I was recently informed by my manager that he was told by HR to remove me from the staffing for last week as I was under investigation. I called HR and was told they couldn't tell me anything and I would be contacted I'm due course, my manager also doesn't know why I have been suspended. Can anyone help me out with some advice please. Thanks
