Ilizarov Frame On Broken Leg

Hi everyone,
Has anyone/a relative had an Ilizarov Frame to repair a broken leg? Just wondered what peoples experiences were.
I had a nasty fall whilst ice-skating on 22nd Feb and suffered three spiral fractures to my right lower leg. One in the Fibula and two in the Tibia. My consultant fit the Ilizarov frame on 27th Feb, consisting of 4 metal rings surrounding my leg at various points, with 10 pins keeping my bones aligned whilst they heal.
Initially I was told I would be in the frame for around 8 months. However, as I able to partially weight bear the morning after the frame was fit and was walking with crutches and managing stairs the following day, the consultant said it would be more likely 4-5 months. He explained this was due to the fact that the more you can weight bear, it helps the bones to heal faster.

My friend had one after a ski accident. She wore it for about 9 months and to be honest it saved her from losing her leg.She walks fine now and is not in any pain. She has some dent scars but she was offered plastic surgery for them, she declined as she already had 6 operations on her leg and compared to that scar they were nothing.Luckily maxi dresses were the fashion at the time.Good luck.xx:0
