Becoming a Student September 2015

Hi Everyone, I am after some advice and help as I have spoken to my local council (who were next to useless) and unable to advise me!

I am a single parent to 3 children, 2 of whom are disabled (one severely attending a special school and one moderately).
I am starting University full time from September this year (although I do not have to attend much, most of it will be from home, so is do-able with my childrens commitments).

Presently, I live in a Council adapted property with my children, I receive Full Housing Benefit, Council Tax Benefit, Child Tax Credits, Income Support (reduced rate) and Carers Allowance and my two sons DLA.

I am aware that I cannot claim carers allowance from September, but I do not know how my other benefits will be affected? Could someone please advise me.

Thank you.

As a full time student, you're not liable for council tax.

Your student finance (apart from the tuition fee loan) will be counted as income for benefits. This is whether you take it all or not.

  • don't forget the parental learning allowance which is a top up of student loan i think (not sure)worth unto £30 a week, and you maybe able to get more child care as they will pay 85% of the cost(within limits)
