my jack russell keeps scratching and bitting at her skin.
she has been treated for fleas and is brushed regularly, she also has a natural dog food and a tea spoon of cod liver oil in her food once a day.
i combed her today and her skin is flakey.
any suggestions on what i can do to ease this for her?

even though you are feeding her well on a good food it still could be something in the food

check the ingredients carefully I now feed a different food from the GOOD one I thought I was feeding this one has NO cereals or fillers not even rice - I have six dogs on this food and my daughter has two - the all eat well and are in fantastic condition my vet even asked what I was doing

so check all the ingredients - I will email you the food I am using now and it could be worth you getting a small bag to try remember it could take a month to get the skin right
there is also a shampoo I use that I will pm you the details

Agree that it could be the food. One of my dogs is super sensitive to foods and I have tried all sorts. Some foods were great for his skin but he didn't like the taste etc. and we have been to the vets quite a bit over the years with dermatitis and reactions. We've finally found that 'Greenwoods' food works for us. Good quality coat and skin, and he likes the taste (we use a mix of wet and dry).

One thing I use for one of my dogs is the #Mobile Bones' supplement for her joints. The company do another supplement called 'Bionic Biotic' or something which is aimed at skin, tummy balance etc. Might be worth a look to see if it would be suitable? They do sample packs.

I had the same problem with one of mine. This was befor there was the variety of foods that are available today.

After a lot of trial and error I doscovered it was wheat gluten that was causing it.

Another dog scratched whenever fed anything connected to lamb.

Try a food with few ingredients and does not contain anything that is in the current food.

Maybe fish and rice if he hasn't had these before or fish and potato or turkey and vegetables.

It could be cereal in her food if it's not grain free.

Cereal is a massive allergen to dogs. What good is it you're feeding?

Mine both have skin issues. One gets hives and rashes if he has any grain at all the other gets awful dandruff. Both were food related.

I switched to raw and they've cleared right up but obviously understand the vast majority don't want to do that. There's plenty of grain free food options available.

I would be suggesting look at the food.

I remember going to a talk by John Burns about why he developed dog food and it was all to do with animals with skin complaints and allergies.

Saying that there are a couple of products which might help:
    anicura: http://www.anicura.co.uk/
    Dermacton by Aromesse: http://www.aromesse.com/skin-problem/petnat-itchy-skin-relief-dermacton-cream-spray-shampoo-dog-canine.html

I always found that funny because burns food (besides the few grain free ones) have so much rice, corn, oats etc in which are massive allergen was to a lot of dogs and in many dogs the cause of the itchy skin.

I'm not slating burns. It's not a bad food as in there's no nasties in it but most are almost 70% rice. And it's around £40 for 15kg, that's a lot to pay for some rice mildly flavoured with meat.

This was quite some years ago!- possibly 15?? It was an interesting talk as he said that most clients came to the surgery and wanted a tablet etc that would cure the problem when he suggested that maybe they should change the food to approx 1/3 each meat (chicken), veg and rice. On the whole folk did not want the bother of making the food themselves. Since then of course there has been a boom in allergy free complete dried food

Yeah I'm sure his intentions at the time were great.

Now there's so much better available for the price. Millies wolfheart for example.
