Fitting new bathroom - good price

Options
Just had a quote for a bathroom. Quote is for labour only. The guy said he is semi retired draws pensions etc. (not sure why he told us that!). Anyway, we have a small bathroom and would buy the bath tiles etc ourselves. He would strip out the bathroom and do the work which he said would take about 1 week. He quoted £1475 plus VAT, which seems a bit high to my husband and myself. Is this reasonable? Its a long time since we had any work done so we could do with some advice.

Will get another quote but would appreciate some views. Thanks.

Why plus VAT if he is retired? I would have thought £1000 tops.

Good morning: I would get at least 3 written quotes (recommendations from friends, family, colleagues)...the cost will vary according to several factors including your location, if you are moving sanitaryware around the room,if new electrics are involved, pipework requiring boxing in, amount of tiling (i.e. floor and ceiling, area),materials (i.e. consumables, adhesive, grout, timber, cable, copper pipe, waste and soil pipe) and ,most importantly, the standard of work.

    That sounds pretty high.

I'm asking for bathroom quotes at the moment too, I'll let you know what I get back.

A colleague of mine paid about 600 for plumbing the suite in only. He used these websites:

over £200 per day for someone is is retired & not a pro is too much!

If you are getting quotes for labour only then I would get a cost and ask how many days it takes. You should aim for someone who has a day rate of £100/day. However when you get the quote, make sure you pay for the job & not a day rate just in case it takes longer. Hope that makes sense ;)

Good morning: It would be difficult to find a competent bathroom installer/plumber who would charge £100/day in the Southeast. I would never pay anyone by the day, always by the job. I just remembered posting on this revived thread a short time ago...wildly varying prices and opinions;) http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=175587 To find a plumber in your area visit http://www.iphe.org.uk/iphememdb.html

  • I've been quoted £1800 plus VAT just to fit a new toilet, sink & shower in my 5'10 by 5'6 bathroom, plus an additional £30 per Sq meter if we want it tiled. Dont think i will accepting that one. Just waiting on another one, which i am hoping will be cheaper.

Good morning: More quotes are definitely in order... if it is a straight forward job i.e. no shower pump or new electrics (lighting, extractor), no major relocation of sanitaryware, labour only I wouldn't expect to pay that much... I'm speaking as a fellow Kent resident and plumber's OH (down by the seaside in sunny Thanet).

    Hi

We had our bathroom fitted in December our neighbour told us about him his self employed but also fits for b and q

we had a shower/bath, back to wall wc and semi pedestal sink fitted he also fitted my 3 units plus worktop and shower and chrome rad on wall he charged us £800

and as we were getting the floor and the walls top to bottom tiled he did this for an extra £700

when we were getting quotes b and q said it would cost us £1500 for just a standard bath, sink and toilet so i think we had a good deal and he was excellent couldnt wish for someone better
