Annual travel insurance

i have already arranged a DIY travel trip for next year. i currently have an annual travel poilicy (with AXA) but i am considering changing to another provider.
what happens, assuming i change provider now, if in the future i have to change or cancel my travel plans (with a legitimate reason)?
would i be covered and if so by which provider - the one in place when i planned the holiday (AXA) or the new provider?
i am sure this has topic has been raised before so apologies in advance.
thanks.

Its the one in force at the time of the incident, so unless something happens before you buy the new one then its the new one0
