Cuba - Varedaro.

We are flying out to Cuba this Friday for 2 weeks and will be staying at the Iberostar Laguna Azul hotel. I know that trip advisor is subjective but I am really worried by some of the reviews recently. Has anyone been to this area or had problems with a hotel and been able to get help from their tour rep - such as a room without insect problems etc.
Does complaining get you anywhere, I have never had to complain about a poor holiday room before so want to be aware as to what I should do besides the obvious of speaking to reception. What should we expect and what should they do for us if there are problems

Yes we have stayed there. Had various issues, none major, however the rep (thomas cook) was rubbish only success we had with sorting things was main reception or guest relations - but you do need to be firm
No insect problems, just wardrobe door that kept falling out of the runners, replenishment of items, some issues with booking the restaurants, and they seem to keep some of the facilities 'hidden' so if there is something you want to do/experience make a point of asking where/when it is

Thank you that's interesting. Anyone any tips on amount of spending money to take? We are on an all inclusive resort but will want to take up some of the excursions.

Most Cubans I met in Varadero had strong shoulders thru constantly shrugging them with upturned palms accompanied by "so?" "And?"

We had a great holiday at Sol Palmeras in Varadero a couple of years ago. Had a newly refurbed bungalow & no probs with bugs whatsoever even though we were ground level.

Be careful on the beach, they have sand fleas there, they were spraying from small planes dropping chemicals once a week at the crack of dawn.

Don't put your towels on the furniture & give them a good shake outside so you don't transfer any little blighters inside.

Can't help with spending money, we'd toured Cuba beforehand so were just chilling for a week afterwards.

Ask nicely when you arrive for the floor or room location you'd prefer, that is how we got the refurb bungelow & in Havana we'd got a refurbed room there as well. I think you've done your TA research already, take it with a pinch of salt & have a great time.
Seen it all, done it all, can't remember most of it.
