What's the procedure for moving in with a council tenant?

Not sure I have exactly the right sub-forum, but I'm not sure what's a better one.

I want to move in with my girlfriend who is a council tenant. She's had the flat for 10 years, and lives there alone. There are 2 bedrooms. The rent is paid via housing benefit.

What do we need to do for me to move in there? Do I have to become a joint tenant with her? If so, what are the council going to want me to provide them with? Are they going to want to vet every aspect of my life (I've lived a lot of years without paperwork or records, plus I have some credit issues from years ago).

Is it possible for me to just live with her without being on the tenancy, or with sub letting?

I'm not really sure where to begin with the Google searching.

Any help appreciated. Thanks.

make enquiries at the council. may have to do a joint tenancy, so you both become liable for rent etc.
breathe in, breathe out- You're alive! Everything else is a bonus, right? RIGHT??

Is it possible for me to be her lodger, but also be her partner when it comes to join benefit claims/tax credits?

Lodgers do not share a bed with their landlords.
  • Hi,

if you love her enough to move in, just marry her.

Thanks, but it's probably best to keep our personal religious impulses out of this.

Whilst I appreciate what you're saying, from a tenancy perspective, does our night time configuration actually matter?

Do you say that to every co-habiting couple that you know or hear of? If not then your moralising has no place on here, take it to the loonyweefrees.nutters forum.

GF would have to notify housing benefits/dwp that someone else is moving in and what income you have ?

Also what does it say on GF tenancy agreement about someone moving in !

I was thinking it would make it easier with the paperwork for the lodger/lover/husband, when dealing with the council.
