Is a second hand item covered on contents insurance?

I lost my mum last year and so have been using her TVin my new home.
Tonight I was reaching behind the TV to unplug something and lost my balance and took the TV down with me.
I am 8 months pregnant and can only put it down to that.
The TV is knackered now. The screen has cracked and it won't switch on as I landed on it.
My question is this,
As the TV was not bought by us, are we covered by my contents insurance ?
We have accidental damage on our policy and it says electrical equipmentis ccovered but we have no receipts etc
I know it was an expensive TV when it was bought about 6 years ago as I remember thinking my mum was mad. It's a Sony bravia 46" Ltd.
Before I ring the insurance people in the morning can someone advise me what the likely outcome would be.

Yes .0 -
Take into consideration your excess, the value they might now put on the TV plus additional premiums for the next few years due to your loss of no claims...
It might be more worthwhile to have a look for a second hand TV on something like Gumtree.0 -
Thanks for the replies. I think I'll have a look on Gumtree /ebay tonight weigh up my options.
Will my insurance tell me what they would likely give us before we put the claim in or not?0 -

Don't talk to them unless you are going to claim. As soon as you do, it will likely be recorded as a claim.
Currys have a Sony Bravia 48" LED for £429 which is possibly better than what you have/had. You might get vouchers to this value less your excess.
What's your excess0 -
It's only £150. Had a quick look and 2nd hand ones local to me are asking around £250 and they are a few years old. Really don't know what to do. I definitely won't speak to the insurance people until I've had a think. D
Don't need this faff at 8 months pregnant. And I have really hurt my knee when I fell. And I'm sad as it was my mums TV(

I think my mum paid about £1000 odd but it was about 6 years ago so it was a proper top of the range one. I'd never expect that kind of figure back!!!0

Yeah, the thing is as I mentioned they might now only pay out £3-400. Minus your excess that could be as low as £150, plus yout premium will be higher for the next few years, definitely isn't worth claiming.
There's some great deals on TV's these days. Have a look on the likes of richersounds, they always have a huge range of TV's and are very competetive on price0 -

I think I might just shop around. Like you say lee111s if I take into consideration the excess etc it's probably not worth it.
I can get a good size TV for about £300 and I will still have cheaper premiums. Glad I came on here x0 -
