I first met this elderly lady almost 10 years ago, when she was in her early 90s - the Nana of the bride. She was a bright, funny lady who had worked hard all her life, marrying during WWII, and living through the London Blitz, brought up several sons and a daughter and who had been widowed fairly young. She thoroughly enjoyed the wedding, stayed late, talking to everyone, finding out as much as she could about all the guests.
Over the years, I've met her at various family gatherings, and her zest for life never diminished. She was as neat as a new pin, and was always so well co-ordinated - her blouses and cardis always matched (cardis generally hand-knitted beautifully by herself) and always with matching ear-rings. She's lived with her daughter and her husband for several years.
She had to give up one of her pleasures - going to Bingo - when her hearing began to go - but in 2013, on her 100th birthday, she was given an I-pad, which she took to with great alacrity - and proceeded to join on-line bingo clubs - winning more times than most!
Last night, after enjoying a lovely Easter, with her family (including great-granddaughters staying) she slipped peacefully away, aged 101 years 6 months. Yesterday she had been joking with neighbours about wanting a toy-boy, and when they said -oh you wouldn't want him - he snores, she said - oh that's alright, I'm deaf!. Shouts of laughter all round.
Now, there's a big family who are sad that she has left them, but oh so glad that she has stayed for so long - and that she was blessed with retaining what made her Nana for all her life.
I was privileged to have known such a lovely lady who has touched so many lives.

I always have so much admiration for women like this, who age so elegantly. My OH's grandmother has recently turned 80 and is always dressed immaculately, she would never leave the house in her pyjamas unlike half of my generation!Over the years, I've met her at various family gatherings, and her zest for life never diminished. She was as neat as a new pin, and was always so well co-ordinated - her blouses and cardis always matched (cardis generally hand-knitted beautifully by herself) and always with matching ear-rings.
