Toddler - Which mattress is best?

We're going to buy DS who's 2.5yrs his first big boy bed. Going straight for a normal 3ft single bed. Rather lost as to which kind of mattress to buy him. Pocket sprung. Normal sprung. Memory foam. Normal foam. Sprung plus foam. Soft/medium/firm support? The options are endless!!
Any ideas which ones are best for a toddler?

what's the bottom of the bed like, is it wooden slats? my toddler has wooden slats on his bed. i bought the mattress that came with the bed, it was the cheapest option i could see. it's fine for him, he's only 2 but it's not really good enough for me to lie down with him - i can see the damage i've done already and he's only had the bed a few months. if you're planning on lying down with him when he's ill etc. then it's worth paying extra and not getting the cheapest mattress.
i think it just said 'sprung mattress' though.
one thing i hadn't thought of when changing from cot to bed was the vomit aspect. i didn't buy a waterproof sheet for the bed, thinking i wouldn't need it until he was toilet training (he was under 2 at the time). he got a tummy bug and covered the mattress in sick, and i had to try to clean it  i ended up washing it and drying it out, borrowing my eldest's mattress in the meantime and making him sleep on his futon. i bought a waterproof sheet asap after that :rotfl:'bad mothers club' member 13

We had a budget of about £100 for the mattresses for the kids and just tried to get the best we could.
A fwe yrs ago, for dd we got a silentnight mattress for £100 out of a catalogue, we got a plastic sheet to protect against wetting and she's used it as a trampoline:mad: but its still good as new.
Last week, for ds, we bought a silentnight linen mattress (for slatted bed) for £99 from www.furniture-finders.co.uk they charged £30 delivery:eek: but total still came in cheaper than anywhere else (RRP £165) and it is SO comfy (medium firm).
I'm thinking of getting canopies to go over the beds to stop the jumping!

we got ds a toddler bed, but have put his cotbed mattress on it, with toys in the gap, as I would rather not worry too much about this one and get through night time toilet training, then get better quality for his next longer term bed.0

You can get mattresses with zip off washable covers which I think are ideal for little ones beds. One day I might be more organised...........

This seems a really good price. As you said, even with delivery cost, it is way cheaper than other companies who are offering free delivery.
Can I ask how long the delivery leadtime was? On the web it says 14days but when I called them they said they could deliver it next day for the same £30 charge.
Thanks.Dummie0 -
Not being toilet trained is also a concern for me but he's still in nappies during the day and as he's not even showing the slightest awareness that he's wet when his nappy sometimes leak and soaks through to his trousers and vest, I can't really see it happening anytime soon.
He's not been sick or leaked his night time nappy for a long long time now so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I did look at the mother care mattresses with the zip off washable topper but as it also has a water proof layer on it DS tends to get quite hot and sweaty.
Thanks for your advise everyone.Dummie0 -

I ordered on the Wednesday, rec'd confirmation letter/invoice the following day and they phoned Tuesday to arrange delivery for the Wednesday.
I ordered online so didn't speak to them until they phoned me to arrange delivery. Maybe they can arraange quicker delivery when you order over the phone? We had ordered a bed elsewhere which was getting delivered the following Friday so we weren't in a hurry for the mattress.

when using a waterproof layer i use 2 sheets instead on one, it helps with the sweatiness. i read about that on an article about eczema in children. i do it on my own bed too, the waterproof sheet helps with asthma from dust mites, and using 2 sheets really makes a difference, i don't get sweaty from the plastic cover.'bad mothers club' member 13
