Hi and thanks for reading, I hope one of you can help. I'm looking to buy a car in the next few weeks and hope to PX my wife's car for it.

She won't be viewing/test driving with me but wants shot of her motor, so what do I need to take with me when I drive her car to a dealership to PX it? What will satisfy the dealer that the car is legit to PX? Do I need her to transfer ownership before I do it?

Thanks in advance.

She'll probably have to be there to sign the paperwork for the trade in part of the transaction, but she shouldn't need to be there for the rest - you can take the car in and get it valued, decide on the numbers, and then have her come in to sign.

    Thanks Herzlos,
I've been looking for the spec of vehicle I'm after and my options are severely limited round these parts, so I'm having to look 100+ miles away. This means that her coming with me is not an option (work, children etc) so if that is the only way then she may have to sign the old rust bucket over to me beforehand.

If it's that bad of a rust bucket then you'll probably be able to get the same discount by not doing a trade in and Gumtree or scraping it.

Don't forget to ask on line dealers e.g. Webuyanycar.com for a valuation. I got more from them than dealer offered me for trade in.

As long as the addresses match on the p/x V5 and the invoice for the new car, it's unlikely they will be bothered. You could get your wife to sign the V5 before you go, but in my experience you could sign it M. Mouse if you wanted. They will know where to find you if it does turn out to be stolen.

Usually you don't walk away with the car there and then, you come back a week later or so and they will give the car a valet, service, MOT etc before picking it up. So you could ask to take the paperwork after viewing the car, get your wife to sign it and then take it back when you pick up the car?

Thanks to all, particularly Missile - I think that's how we'll go.
