Work outside of normal hours

Do you think working outside your normal hours is reflected by the 'status' you are in a company?
IE the higher up you are the more is expected of you, or do you think it doesn't matter where you are in the food chain nowadays everyone is expected to work evening and weekends and we should be lucky we have a job?
I used to, when in a managerial role. Then ended up going off sick and having to give up the job because the extra unpaid time was expected of me but I had no back up whatsoever and I realised that what I was giving to the company wasn't appreciated.
Lesson learned, and now there would have to be an extremely good reason for me to do so. I had a debate in my last job about unpaid overtime. My perspective was that if they weren't prepared to pay me overtime but would give an agency person twice the rate to cover, then they could take a running jump.
For me it's not about career progression as I don't want to get back on the management ladder, it's about work life balance. And if I need to move jobs to get that, that's what I'll do.All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -

This is running true with me. I'm nowhere near management level, but work a lot more than my Director (in hours), he can't work a computer so I do all his emails (without his input), all his paperwork (again without him knowing anything about the content - he's happy fo rme to just reply or action as I see fit). I work an extra hour a day normally but a couple of times a week I do an extra 2-3 hours extra, I also work from home on weekends.
Recently I've been diagnosed with A Fib, and am looking at ways of reducing my 'attacks'. Thing is I lov emy job, I'm busy and doing a lot of work well above my post - but of course with no extra money or recognition.
I have posted about it before as I find it very hard when I come back form a holiday, it takes 2.5 times as long to catch up, so if I have a day off it will take 2.5 days to be back where I was, purely as i have my work, my Director's work and then the usual day to day work to do.
I just had 6 days off and so will be back up to date in a week or so, but last week I was in hospital for a day as I passed out and when I came too my sight had gone in one eye, so I spend the day in casualty.
I didn't know if this was 'normal' of work in these times - I just hear how there's no jobs, people are lucky to have jobs etc and so as i love my job, didn't know what was expected/taking the p!ss.Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....0 -
I think there is a sort of trade-off - if you want higher pay and status, and perhaps a job that interests you, you lose some of your freedom. Despite having a decent degree, I could never think of anything I would actually enjoy doing that would earn me a living (I'm quite happy at home doing domestic things, but no one will pay me to do that in my own home!), so I took the other path - my job pays the bills and I arrive and leave on time; that's all I ask of it.Life is mainly froth and bubble
