Broken Gas Meter/British Gas

Hello,
Currently the dial on my gas meter has stuck and therefore I am only paying the standing charge.
I'm currently with British Gas and soon as I found out about this I called them and stated that my meter was broke and gave a meter reading the guy on the phone had me on hold for a few minutes while he said that he spoke to a maintenance engineer.
He then came back to me and ask for the amount that was on the meter and I told him the amount and he did a bit of number crunching and said that it was fine and if I was concerned about the meter I should call back in 2 weeks.
I left it for 2 weeks and it was still the same only taking the standing charge so I called back and spoke to a lady and she said that there must be a fault with the meter and that they would get a engineer around to sort it out, I also explained to her that I was worried that I might get a high bill for which she said that any money I owed if it couldn't be paid all at once they can put it on my meter to pay it off weekly.
The question I have is , how do they know how much gas I have used if the meter is broken and do they get reading from there side ? or is it just an estimate.
Many Thanks

I take it this is a prepay gas meter if its still clocking up the standing charge.Does the meter say "call help " and "off " on the first screen ?0

Thank you for the reply,
It's a card meter , I just use the home top up on British Gas to top up, no error message is coming up I can still top it up as normal , it only takes the standing charge.0 -

Estimation.0 -
Thank you for the reply
So if it's an estimation they will have to go by my previous months I have used gas then , so i am a very low gas user so the bill that they give me when the meter is fixed should reflect this?
