Can someone help explain what these benefits are?

Hi,

I'm pregnant with my first child (due in January) and so have gone onto entitledto.com to see what benefits we would be able to get like working tax credit etc.
I put into the website that we had a month old baby and we're spending £150 a week on childcare, as that's roughly what we'll be spending.
My partnet and I earn roughly 50k between us, so I didn't think we'd be entitled to very much, but it seems we're entitled to quite a bit.
It says we can get Child Benefit which is just over £18 a month, also Working Tax Credit £85.79 a week and Child Tax Credit which is £56.21 a week.

What are these Working Tax credits and Child Tax credits? Is this money that we get (presume not) or does it mean that we don't get taxed on this amount?

Any help would be appreciated - not sure if I'm being thick!

Thanks Yorkshirechick

Child Benefit is £17.10 a week for your first child, this is paid to everyone regardless of income.

I can't see that you would get WTC. And I think CTC would only be paid for the first year. Best person to ask here is Gaz, he has a thread offering help

everyone gets child benefit regardless of income-high or low-first child is £18.10 a week.

you definately will not get working tax credits as your joint annual household income needs to be below £15k.working tax credits is to bump up households with a low income...your income of £50k is HIGH compared to most.

you can earn up to £60k a year to qualify for child tax credits-on this income the most is roughly £10 a week-but slightly more for the first year of babys life.its certainly not the £56 a week you think you will get.id say £20 max a week but will reduce to more like £10 when child is one year old.

how much will your household income be when you go on maternity leave? cos your initial figure for child tax credits will be based on that figure as your household income will be lower than normal.

both child benefit and child tax credits arent taxed on-they are a weekly amount that gets paid directly to person that looks after child..but YOU must claim them. You wont just get it automatically paid just cos you have a child-you can find claim forms for both benefits in your bounty pack which you will get in hospital when baby is born..

I think you will just get £18 child benifit and about £20 tax credit. you have to earn under £15,000 to get working tax credit and under £25,000 to get that amount of child tax credit.
