Erm, it's really not! It's true that price per linear metre is affected by the size of the steel, but it's more likely to be around £40 per metre - so £320 plus VAT. Sometimes you need two. Very much an 'ish' but I had to comment - no way is it £24k!!

That compares pretty closely with the cost of the one I bought recently.

    Structural engineer cost more.

You would definitely need a structural engineer.

Even a RSJ at 8m may 'sag' slightly in the centre, which could easily interfere with the running of the bifold doors beneath,

At 8m long an undersized steel beam (which might or might not be an RSJ) could do more than sag slightly! Even if there is no load on it to speak of, a small RSJ this long would sag noticeably just under its own weight. Anything could happen if you put serious load on it.

You need to find out what size piece of steel you need. In other words, you need a qualified structural engineer.

RSJ (rolled steel joists) are an old fashioned section and disappeared in mainstay structural work sometime in the 1980s, these days common sections for structural work used are called UB (universal beams) UC (universal columns) or PFC (parallel flanged channel)

UC are typically used to support a load where PFCs and UBs are used in the span.

Something like an 8m 203x133x25KG used by the bucket load in domestic work would land to me sub £100 ex VAT unpainted.

However as others have pointed out you would need the calcs done by a structural engineer., although people often think that the SE produces workable drawings, they don't and anything more than a few simple beams needs to be properly drawn by a draughtsman.

The beam may need web stiffeners or holes in it so the price is a movable feast.

Something else to remember is that structural steel as of July last year is subject to CE marking, BS1090 and depending on the application and occupancy of the dwelling falls under either EX1 or 2. there are still many grey areas, and building control at the moment is far from up to speed, however insurers are looking at 1090, and its becoming clearer that they will want to see structural work in domestic builds to be fabricated with a CE stamp.

I put up a new balcony for a customer a month or so back on a 2 story domestic dweling and that fell under CE marking.

Sorry - to the people that did not read my post properly.

I said the cost of the actual steel is irrelavent - its the total cost of the job that is important, and that was my estimation.

Frankly the only reason why the OP would need the actual cost of the steel them self would be if they were going to undertake the building work them self, but if this were the case then I don't think they would need to be asking the cost of the steel on this forum!

It's unlikely to cost £24k either. 3-4 metres (the average) is about £1500 plus VAT for my boys. It may cost more, but does't increase exponentially.

From previous posts, I don't even think the OP is supporting any real weight above, just flat roof joists.

bedroom above according to the op - could be something fairly significant...

could be that the op has not considered the amount of work involved in putting something like this in place and is hoping the price of the beam is the main cost... OP?

Out of interest what are job-in buildings doing about CE marking of structural steels? Seams most are compleatly unaware at the moment.

    Thanks everyone so far.

r_sole, god no i know the beam will be the cheapest part, the bifold doors will be approx £1k per metre opening (ballpark price), just wasnt sure on prices of RSJ's. whether they're 100's or 1000's of pounds. I know the old £1k-£1200 per m2 calculation and used that, just doing some homework so i know when the builders come to quote/suck teeth/accept the challenge :)

Thanks Doozergirl, when you say £1500 plus VAT for 3-4m for your boys, what did you mean please? Do you have guys who do this, fit beams? (I'm in Essex so a bit far away, but interested in in there are teams of guys who just do this, open up walls and fit the steel/RSJ/beam)
