If you're using a BT line, get caller ID and leave any witheld or international callers to the answerphone (on the rare occasion when it's urgent they'll leave a message).
Unfortunately, many on here will find that their friends' and family's weekday daytime calls appear as 'International' on their Caller Display - because many use 1899, 18866 or 18185.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

    I hadn't realised that.

My experience of TPS is that they're pretty useless - they haven't replied to any of my emails over the last 3 weeks, and ringing their tel.no. only results in automated messages and no opportunity to speak to a human. Virgin Media seem unable/unwilling to block unwanted calls either. I think I'm just going to have to find another cable provider who offers a better service.

I am exdirectory, and registered with the Telephone Preference Service. (0845 0700707). (note,if you are getting "silent calls" the TPS have a separate department for them, so say you are getting bothered by both manned and silent calls.) Something to be aware of, is that the Telephone Preference Services registration has a limited period. You must re-register every 5 years.(I spoke to them today) It is well worth it, and only takes a short call to the number above. I have had a very good service from them since I was registered. But I am now getting calls from 01158507616. It is just one number belonging to an infamous company called Jigaw Insurance, who have offices in Nottingham and Birmingham. I have reported them to the TPS, amongst others, and am awaiting results. See the thread for Silent/Nuisance Calls. Search for Yet Another Jigsaw 01158507616 victim.

I've also found that saying something along the lines of
"I'm registered with the TPS and you shouldn't be calling this number. I believe that if I report you, you can have your licence revoked"
I never usually get beyond the first 6 words before they cut the call - occaisionally I've even got a sorry - wonders will never cease!

Just out of interest, does the TPS cover companies with whom you already have an association. I only ask as both Talk Talk and Halifax have been plaguing us this week and just won't take no for an answer.

What you have been told is correct, there is no way of blocking calls however you may consider having Anon Call Blocking adding to your line which would stop some companies ringing you who withold their number.

The only calls TPS don;t deal with are from overseas - if you're still getting calls from UK-based floggers, have a look at the TPS site for info they need, then take details down and fill in an online complaint.

Virgin Media are talking borrocks - as usual...

It's not Virgin Media that are talking borrocks about the new/recycled numbers ;)

Talk Talk rang AGAIN and I specifically asked them not to call when they rang last night. I was polite but firm and in an irratated voice explained that I had told them last night that we weren't interested and would they stop calling.

I've reported them to TPS so we'll see what happens - diddly squat no doubt.
