Tooth Extraction under General Anastetic

I am about to lose one of my molars and I am scared of the extraction process as I don't breathe well through my nose. I always feel like I am choking and I think having read this I will enquire about sedation for the procedure. The alternative is a double root canal on a tooth that is 99% filling and I have been aware for a while that the tooth was at risk..0

I've had both. An upper wisdom tooth out under LA and sedation, and two bottom wisdom teeth under GA. Both were very similar. With the sedation, I was still completely out of it, and totally relaxed.
OP, if this needs done quickly, I'd go for sedation. I waited over 18 months for extractions under GA. It was miserable, constant pain and infections. They were prescribing almost endless antibiotics which I wasn't happy about but there was nothing else I could do. With the sedation, I remember almost nothing. I'm not sure what they gave me but it was really good0 -
I am similar to ripplyuk. I've had 2 wisdom teeth under LA and the other 2 under GA as they were impacted.
I also live in North London and had mine out at a hospital in Barnet. I think I had to wait about 6 months in total from seeing my dentist for the first time to getting the tooth out, with a couple of pre-hospital visits, one examining my teeth and the other to examine my health to see if I was healthy enough for GA and to get me ready for being admitted.
GA is a load of faff because as someone said you feel so silly just because of a tooth. But I'm glad I had to go under GA as the 2nd tooth I got extracted the dentist didn't inject ALL of the LA properly, some of it was sitting at the bottom of the mouth until I was able to spit it out. I could still feel a bit of the pain when he was pulling out the tooth! I tried to tell him but my mouth was full of his fingers at the time!0 -
Like I said previously I had LA before. I don't remember a lot of it granted. Apparently I was screaming the place down, the only thing I do remember was the dentist pulling my tooth out. It had crumbled in my mouth in half. They got the first half out but struggled at the second half and I remember that hurting.
Gosh this sucks. I'm sooooo scared0 -

Was it just LA - and you don't remember much because you found it traumatic - Or was it LA + sedation.
If you've not had LA + sedation, you will find that much better than LA alone.
And by sedation, I mean something intravenously during the procedure - not just a pill or two an hour before. How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.0 -
Not sure, I had one injection in my mouth and that was it, nothing to follow/top up or anything :-/0

Is that tooth not out yet?
Your first post on this was 3 months ago. Have you not done anything about it yet?How to find a dentist.

I insisted on having my wisdom teeth out with a GA, but having had allsorts done under sedation (including this) I wouldn't make the same choice again.0 -
An extraction takes (or at least for me) about 3 seconds, why are people so frightened.
Its a few seconds discomfort against hours and hours of toothache which is a far worse pain than
the discomfort of an extraction......make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
I had a back molar out, last year, under local and was very nervous, as a previous dentist at the practice (luckily he went home for a month's visit and didn't come back) hurt me during a simple descale.
I keep my eyes closed during procedures , so felt the dentist using her instruments to look at the job in hand. Then she told me to bite on a swab...
She had extracted the tooth, yet I thought she hadn't started; utterly pain free, though my mouth was sore next day.0
