Tooth Extraction under General Anastetic

I've been trying to find as much information as I can about this and I've had very little success, so I was wondering if anyone will be able to help me.

I have a tooth that I know will need extraction. I'm absolutely terrified of Dentists and had my first tooth extracted under Local Anastetic (this will only be my second tooth) and reacted badly.

This time I want it done under General Anastetic. Problem is, when I had my last one out, I was out of work so the cost was covered by the NHS. I'm now working and GA will cost more than LA I am assuming.

Does anyone know *roughly* how much it will cost to have one tooth extracted under GA??

I assume that a dentist would refer you to a maxifacial surgeon at your local hospital, or refer you to a dental hospital, i also assume that no dental surgery are equipped to deal with a ga.

To have a tooth extracted with General anaesthetic you will have to be referred by your dentist to the community dental service who deal with phobic patients.

On the plus side it will cost you nothing even if you pay for treatment, on the minus side your initial appointment will be weeks or months away and final treatment some time after that. It depends on the area you live in. In my area people will wait around a year for even an urgent GA extraction. A few miles away they only wait around six weeks.

Local anaesthetic + sedation would be a lot quicker, and safer.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

Both GA and sedation will be offered by your community service but you need to see a dentist first to be referred. Waiting times can be very long so if you leave it until you have bad toothache ............... Best to act now.
  • Thanks for the advice. I screamed the place down when I had LA.

I live in Enfield and my friend got hers done in a place in Tottenham. She didn't have to wait very long but I think it was a private place that she was referred to. Unfortunately she's an NHS patient so she got it done for free...

Ooooh, this is annoying. Luckily I'm in no pain atm, but I wanted to get it done before I go on holiday late July

The Mrs is a private dental patient but when she needed a tooth removed by a maxifacial surgeon (not sure why it needed that rather than the dentist do it themselves) the dentist did a NHS referral.

The actual appointment was at a private hospital and even though it was a 10 minute procedure under local anesthetic she still was given a private room etc. She felt a bit funny going in just for a tooth to be taken out when 99% of the other people there seemed to be in for breast augmentation etc

There was a lot of confusion over the appointments but it was about 5 weeks from the referral to the initial consultation and then another 4 weeks for the procedure. They advised it was "so long" because the surgeon only visits once a week. On the plus side the appointments were both out of hours making it much easier to schedule around.

I'd second this. I've had it done twice on molars and I didn't remember a thing. Both on NHS as well.

OP has already stated they wish to have a GA and last time a LA was done things did not go well.

Of course it's not ideal but it's what the OP wants and may well be best for them as an individual.

So replies saying "I had a LA and was fine" really aren't helpful. Because that is not the OP's experience!

My wife has had a general twice to remove all of her wisdom teeth, she was referred by a private dentist to an NHS maxifacial surgeon, she was offered private treatment ar minor cost but the surgeon did not have extensive experience in dentistry.

From referral to extraction was around ten weeks for my wife, but her teeth weren't causinf problems at the time, the second time she waited four weeks.
