Changing to a single unit meter - changed tariff and payment wi/o informed (EDF)

My parents are changing from E7 to single unit electricity. Changing their meter on 21st April. They are saving around £65 a year by doing this.
They are currently with EDF.
Because they have requested a change in the meter, they have gone onto EDF's standard variable tariff and DD details have been cancelled and gone to quarterly bills.
Dad was never told about going onto standard variable or have the dd details cancelled.
So for three weeks, they are paying over the odds for their electricity - more for being on the standard variable and a little more for not paying by dd. The final week of being on E7, they will be on holiday, so it will be little electricity used - just for fridge, freezers, PVR etc.
Then they have been told in order to go back on DD, they need to pay the debt of £118. They do have the money, but refuse to pay on principle as never was informed of payments and tariff changing. As with it being spring now, the debt will be paid off by June's payment as their DD is around 26th.
Dad has e-mailed to EDF explaining his anger and if they don't rectify the units of electricity used from 31/3-20/4 at charges of the Blue Feb 2017 tariff, then they will cancel the install of the new meter and go elsewhere.
Why have EDF done this? Would they able to do my Dad's request of recalculating the meter on their previous tariff? This would be easy to do as Dad put the meter readings onto the website the prev day. If my Dad was told in the first place when he ordered the new meter to be fitted, he would been ok with it

Presumably because a change of meter requires a new (non E7) tariff, and if not specified, the default tariff is always Standard Variable. EDF will probably blame 'the system', but the agent who arranged the meter switch really should have asked. The switch between the two should be almost instant.
Why they have defaulted the tariff back before the meter switch is beyond me.No free lunch, and no free laptop0
