Excessive car insurance cancellation charges

Hi
I had to cancel my car insurance policy with the post office today, as they would not quote for the new car that I am buying. The total cost of the policy to date (2 months) is £60. I now need to pay an extra £75 for a "short-term" policy and £35 cancellation charge. So, whilst I paid only £60 for the actual car insurance, I now have to pay £110 for them to never do any work for me again..........unfair?
Is this cancellation charge legal - can they charge more than their admin costs?
Also, does anyone know why I should be charged £75 for having the policy for only two out of twelve months?
Do you think that there is any likelihood of getting any/all of these charges back, by following complaints procedures etc?
I'm so angry!!!!!
