Cracks between skirting board and wall on stairs - Best way to fix

Hi,
I have just noticed a small crack between the skirting board and stairs which increases slightly when weight is put on a particular stair (the stair in question squeaks when used).
The property was purchased several months ago and the squeak (but not the crack) was noticed in the survey but ruled as not a problem.
Is this something I should be worried about and what is the easiest way to repair?
Thanks in advance!

It depends on what is allowing the stair to move. Is it the tread itself that is loose and moving - simply screw it onto the support then fill the gap with decorators caulk - or is it the support that is loose which to rectify could mean dismantling part of the staircase for access. Is it a modern pre assembled stair or an old fashioned built as they went along type ?0

Sorry no idea. The house is relatively modern, built in 1995 so it depends on when they changed to the modern method.0
