Mazda 3 2014 - fuel tank capacity lower than stated?

  • Honda Jazz are the worst for fuel gauge accuracy. 42 litre tank, when empty on the fuel gauge and a brim fill will only allow 32-35 litres. According to Honda the low fuel reminder will come on even when there is 7-9 litres left in the tank. Upside is it seems cheap to fill the tank (although you have to do it more often) :)

for a diesel I was always told to fill up once it hits the quarter left. You dont want all the crud that settles on the bottom of the tank getting concentrated and sucked into the fuel lines / filter.

That old chestnut. You do know that the fuel is always drawn from the bottom of the tank?

the crud floats so its sensible to fill up before its empty;):p
  • My ford pickup has a 200 gallon transfer tank, connected to the main tank, so I have 220 gallons of fuel. Costs almost £1000 to fill up, but lasts almost 8000 miles!!!!

My MX-5 is the same. I did once get 47 litres in there, and hadn't run out, but the guage reads zero from about 43 litres and the low fuel light seems to come on very early.

I assume its just Mazda's way of 'protecting' us.

GF has an MX-5 I just assumed it had a small tank as I never got more than 40L in it lol

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

    Hopefully a quicky.

I have a Mazda 3 64 plate (2.2 diesel, 150ps), stated fuel tank capacity on Mazda website is 50l.

I have NEVER, even when tank is 99% empty (estimated range is 0 and driven 3 miles to the garage sort of empty) managed to put more than 43L in.
The tank is as stated, the reading is inaccurate so tank is not 99% empty. You have loads of fuel still left I expect. I did another 50 miles in my last car when trip computer said I had 0 miles left, when I refueled to full I realised I still had another 6 litres in tank.

Life's too short to worry about this. What have you got to gain?

I think it used to be true when cars has steel tanks and they rust out but most moderns will have a plastic tank nowadays

Hubby did 100 miles after zero on his old car. The reading is rather inaccurate on most cars, he has calculated how many miles he should get out of his tank and works from how many he has done and not what the system says.
From your actual mpg (not system calculated or book) work out how many miles you should get out of 50litres and work it that way when you refill.
He was quite concerned recently when he got 57.2 litres in a 55 litre tank recently.
