Hello

I had a car insurance from one provider, expiring on 26-march. I shopped around a few days before that, and got a quote off another provider. I requested cancellation of the old cover from the old provider. However, i forgot to actually follow through and buy the new insurance. I havent driven the car in the interim - it is sitting in the underground parking lot in my building.

My question is- what do i do now? can i buy insurance backdated to the day of expiry? Just carry on and buy insurance from today? Am I in violation of the law? Extremely confused!!!

thanks
-K

    you cannot backdate it.

You are in breach of Continuous Insurance Enforcement. A car needs to be insured or declared SORN.

You can't 'backdate' insurance like you can tax.

I would just insure the car from now. Or SORN it.

  • I will buy insurance asap starting now. But is there any risk of any penalties or action on me for those few days the car was uninsured? What do I do to mitigate that? What can I expect, a letter from DVLA?

Apologies, just a bit freaked out about where I stand.

I think if the car has just been sitting in the car park then I wouldn't worry about it to be honest. If you did get a letter just explain you forgot to buy the new insurance, but you now have it, and you should be OK.

If you've been driving it uninsured, that is another matter entirely.

  • ....it was not insured. that is just 5 days.

Have bought insurance now, but it only starts from today. Fingers crossed, won't drive it for another few days just in case!

If any one else has any thoughts, feel free to share. I will update this thread in a week's time or sooner if there are any developments.

    thanks again.

If its insured then you can drive it. Whats done is done. It was only five days (not the 10 months your original post suggested).
