Yahoo Mail spam

Has anyone heard of any recent issues with an infection of Yahoo mail, ymail and BT ymail?

My local Freegle group has been getting quite a lot of spam mail from members, all basically the same thing and all from Yahoo connected mail.

It is obviously an infection as all the mail is CC'd to 8 addresses from their address books and they seem to be unaware that it is being sent out.

I know that some Yahoo members have received a warning message saying that their account has been getting unwanted attention from an unknown source and they should change passwords etc.

    Hi Torbrex.......
I am a moderator on our local Freegle site & I have definitely seen an increase in all sorts of weird spam / links etc etc over the last few days.
I dont usually see so much.
I moderate the post as 'Hacked' so a note is sent back to the place it can from so they are aware of what is happening.
There is nothing else I can do.

Yahoo mail was hacked about a year ago from memory

Some people just don't change their passwords even when asked by yahoo , some when forced just change it back

Spammers probably bought an old list and there's enough still live with the old passwords to make it noticeable

Bts email servers are now in house and not hosted by yahoo

That depends - some people's BT accounts haven't migrated yet and are still on Yahoo. (I've no idea why it's taking them so long, as I'm sure it's been over a year since they started.)

That is what I have been doing as well but there is a concern that the members who don't get moderated might get infected as well and then the spam will go straight through to the board :(

We are only getting 2 different spam messages but they are both basically the same, "make money online, here is your unique link, don't tell anybody"

We have quite a lot of members on 'non' status and have them on Group settings so that we can switch them all at the same time if there is any issues.

We put out a general Admin warning today and members have been in touch to say they have had the spam from other members that they have dealt with in the past that may have kept them in their address book.

It was also about a year ago that American Yahoo split off and the UK side of things was reorganised in Ireland for the whole of the EU, anyone with an old-time yahoo.com account who wasn't American was basically told to close it down and migrate. I finally learned how to use their disposable email addresses so anyone spamming me from now on, I can hit delete and end of problem rather than getting flooded.

Sadly Yahoo's security is still a bit rubbish compared to even Microsoft and Outlook.com meaning that whatever email address you created, only use it to sign in to Yahoo and stick to disposables for everything else where an email address is the sign-in or the account name.
