People tend to remember the cheap, nasty stuff from Ikea, while they actually have a wide scale of ranges and they have some very nice furniture, if you pay a little more.

My king bed with drawers came from Ikea, wasn't cheap, but it's solid pine, something that you don't see often anymore and considering it's solid wood, it was actually quite cheap, relatively speaking. Sorry to say they have discontinued that model. Best dining table I ever had also came from there, I dare say it was so solid it could have survived a tactical missile attack, alas I had to give it away when moving, sure somebody is still enjoying it somewhere.

If you buy stuff from Ikea, apply for a free family card and swipe it when paying, that way they will take back the items if damaged while putting them together or when transporting them, no questions asked.

I have had mixed success with stuff from Very.co.uk, read the reviews quite carefully, but they often have brilliant sales on furniture and also on occasion some discount codes on top. I have some chests of drawers from them, which are quite sturdy and look good, but I also had a wardrobe from them, where a piece just suddenly snapped while putting it together under the wardrobe's own weight, and as it was semi built, they won't take it back :(

It takes a bit of searching, but Ebay can also be brilliant to find discontinued ranges of the big name retailers at discount prices. Also good for mattresses, bought mine there directly from the manufacturer for 30% of their own list price as they were about to launch a new range and were clearing old stock.
