Holiday compensation

Hi - advice please! We arrived in Florida today and have been told that we will have to change villas in 3 days time. There are 8 in our party including two small children so this is a huge inconvenience and stress, and will effectively cost us a day of our holiday. In total we have paid around £14,000 for this holiday which includes the flights, car hire, villa and theme park tickets. The full package was booked through one company. This company are offering a grand total of £300 compensation but have said this is 'negotiable'. I don't feel this is anywhere near enough when divided by 8 people!
Can anyone advise how to calculate an appropriate amount to ask for? We are here for 13 days so in effect the one day of our holiday which will be spent re-packing, relocating and unpacking equates to over £1,000. Is this an unreasonable figure to ask for? Any advice is welcome and much appreciated! Thank you!

Why are you having to move, and how far is the move? Planned well it shouldn't take a whole day to move, just take out what you need for the first few days and chuck it back in when you need to. I'd say an hour to do that, plus any additional travel time. You're a big group so someone can take the children out to breakfast etc whilst you do it.

I think asking £1,000 is too much, a big part of your holiday cost will be flights which are unaffected by this. Given that they are willing to negotiate I'd say £500 would be fair for the inconvenience caused. Also be sure that they are moving you to an equivalent property.

Start your bidding at £1,000 and be prepared to drop.

And make sure your next accomodation is more than acceptable before doing anything!

Agree that 1/13th of the cost is not fair calculation
Flights were unaffected and must have been approx £4k for 8 people (possibly more) Park tickets for 8 (another £4k+?) car hire? 1/13th of what is left would likely be nearer the £400 mark

You're going to have to be a bit more reasonable, no one in their right mind is going to believe that it will take you an entire day to pack and unpack ;)
  • Thanks for your replies guys. I don't yet know why we have to move, they just said there had been ' a mix up'. It's clear you think £1,000 is too much and I suppose I agree but I'm assuming I need to start higher than I'd really be happy with in a negotiation? I'll take on board the tip to check the next accommodation first!
    Thank you, much appreciated

The new accommodation could be an upgrade if it gets their 'problem' resolved. I imagine the last thing they'll want is you kicking off after they messed up.

Why would it take a full day to move to a nearby villa? It would take you less than a full day to get back to your own house in the UK surely?

What was the cost of the accommodation? The other expenses are just side shows really and haven't been affected by the move I presume? Is the new villa nicer/worse than the one you are leaving?

Are you responsible for cleaning your villa before you leave? If so, then ensure that you only have to clean one place not two (if you have paid any cleaning deposits etc)

I am not suggesting that you're living like pigs, but those things will add up time lost from your holiday.

I was going to ask about cleaning.

It can take a good time if you have to leave the place spotless.

If I was getting an upgrade, I'd be a bit more relaxed, but for the same, no. I'd push for more compensation.

It's not Ocean Florida is it? If so...I'd check their facebook as they seem to be having a shocking time at the moment!
