Buying House Cash Buyer - Advice

We were in that position with ready cash waiting for our ideal house. Aside from the endless nuisance investment calls from our bank holding the money, we were only able to negotiate £8k on a £465k house.0

A Forever Home is the one people would be happy to end up in, not the one they have now.
It is a somewhat nebulous concept, which ensures that many people who believe in its existence spend most of their lives unhappy with where they live and dissatisfied with what they can afford.
As with the Buddhist Nirvana, according to converts, once one acquires this Forever Home, an incredible stillness descends and the person becomes briefly at one with the universe, no longer troubled by feelings of inadequacy, or aspirations of upward mobility.
Unfortunately, reaching such an elevated, trance-like state seems, almost inevitably, to precede a Significant Event, such as early demise, or incapacity and removal to somewhere amusingly described as a 'care' home.
For the reasons above, seeking the Forever Home may be viewed as rather unwise, and actually attaining it, positively dangerous. It is not something I personally recommend.
Dave,
Thanks for the warning. I've just moved house so will I escape the dreadful consequences you describe of having a Forever Home if I say, "It's not ideal but it will do for now"?0 -

I think most people only have houses on loan; they're not for ever. A few lucky souls might find a house fits them for life, but most of us will adapt to changing circumstances, interests and capabilities.
Like Mojisola, we lived in our last house for over 20 years. It was definitely a marvellous property for our working lives and bringing up children, but it no longer 'fitted' once I'd retired and the children became independent adults. Rather than stay there, resenting its limitations and the changes in the environment around, we moved, so we retain only good memories of that home.
I love where I live now, but I'm under no illusions that it will be the wrong property when I lose the physical abilities needed to maintain it all. My wife thinks otherwise, but she's still young!
It's good to hear that you have found the right place, even if it's not quite perfect, yet. I know you were looking for a long time. All the best to you and yours in the new home. I'm sure you'll be just fine there.0 -

I think it's so important to be realistic about whether a house is right for 'now' - it might be a collection of wonderful memories but you can take the memories with you when you move into another place that suits your life now.
It's very hard when a move gets forced on you because you've gone past coping - much better to go earlier when it's a decision you make. I've seen older people who have hung on to properties they can't manage and it can be very sad.
We're realistic about this house not being right for us when we are older and will be sad to leave it but happy to be somewhere more manageable.0 -

Nicely written young Grasshopper
The Forever Home is often found in the last place you expected to find it. It might also look nothing like the image in your dream. There may be no Belfast sink, open log fire or views across wide open countryside. Dreams, as always, can be deceptive of a contented reality.Mornië utulië0 -

If someone made a silly offer on my property I would tell the EA to not accept any revised offers from them, and deal with another buyer.
Bart1 might also find that even the EAs begin to write him off as a timewaster who only makes silly low offers and stop contacting him with news of new instructions which have arrived since the last time they updated their website/Rightmove, thus reducing the number of places he gets to make silly offers on.0
