If you are just doing up to sell, how about putting down the chemical suggestions people have said above already, then getting a new carpet, which will keep its 'new carpet smell' for a good few weeks?

That's what I'm going to do, already tried the washing powder, will try the bicarbonate and vinegar tomorrow then varnish the area next week. Got a new carpet lined up for the following week so hopefully that will all help.

vinegar, biological washing liquid, bicarb of soda and water solution. I forgot to mention, when you add the bicarb, it fizzes, so you need to put it in a bucket.

You need all of them really. I bought a box of bicarb of soda from the cleaning section in Wilkinsons for £1.47. One application probably won't be enough. don't add so much it penetrates to ceiling below.

The shampoo suggested earlier from Amazon, I bought, and it did seem to work at first, but not always. I find the above always works. But if its in wood, it might not be able to get where you need it too, depends on how far its penetrated.

I went back to the flat today with my wife, she had not been in since I did the bio washing powder treatment. She is confident that the smell has gone now and I am just smelling the rather stong powder on the boards now.

Next weekend I shall varish the affected area so hopefully the problem will be gone then.
