Currency for Turkey

We are going to Turkey in July. Whats best - to take Euro or wait until there and change sterling into Lire? Also should I be changing my sterling in euro now to take advantage of the great rate at the moment or just lift it from the autobank as I need it when there? Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hi Vinnygal
Best rates are always in Turkey, just take a small amount of Lira with you for first few hours.

Pretty much as del33 says and if you need to use a card just be careful of bank charges both at home and in Turkey - the Turkish post offices don't charge "commission". Personally I stick with taking sterling as cash
  • I assume you are from the UK so there is no point in changing sterling to euros as the currency in Turkey is lira.

The best thing to do is take a small amount of lira with you and the rest in sterling and exchange out thre as you get a better rate in Turkey than here. Or use the ATMs to withdraw lira.

take sterling cash and change it there.
You may find you get better rates in smaller exchanges than in the bank.

If you have one of the recommended fee-free cards for travel (e.g. Halifax Clarity), use that to withdraw Lira at ATMs when you arrive and pay it off as soon as possible. That method always beats changing cash, except in countries where most/all ATMs charge their own fee (e.g. Thailand) or where there are currency controls (e.g. Argentina).

That's great news! Just bought my tickets and arrive early June. I always change my money locally and get a much better rate. I think last year the best I got was 3.68 Locally in September so 3.85 has put a smile on my face.
