Renting to council tenants?

Hi all,

If you own a buy to let property and want to let the council use it for their tenants, is that ok? Are there certain schemes in place with councils to organise this? I have heard of it before, but not really the exact details.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Every council has a different offer. Look up your council's website to see what your local council is offering.

My personal experience was that although I could get a rent of £1200/month on my house (according to the agents), with £900 minimum..... the council offer was capped and would have been less than my mortgage.

Thankyou for your reply. I have had a look on their website under housing but i cant find anything that relates. It's more about current tenants and how they can get housing etc..

If i call them to ask for info...what do i ask for information about, is there a name for this kind of scheme generally?

I'm not sure by your second post if you mean existing tenants of a property. Only if there are current tenants then the council won't consider the house under this scheme.

The house needs to have vacant possession so the council/housing association can rent it to somebody from their waiting list.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

    Hi cattie,

No i did mean an empty property, not one that already has tenants in it. Do you know of any info on this area? I cant seem to find anything on the local council website.

    Thanks x

You should phone them up. Every council calls it a different name. They are also shady about the details until you grill them.

You should also be aware they don't take every house offered. My friend had a perfectly good 2-double-bed house with garden in a nice village just 2 miles from the town and the council said they weren't looking for property there... which I could never understand because the housing list is 20 years long and in my opinion the location/type/size of his house was fantastic.
